Why I Run
Dear Friends and Family,
As I begin my journey towards the Chicago marathon this year, I am excited to be able to prepare with other important races. The Race Against Hate is a special one, as it takes place in my hometown and honors the life of Ricky Birdsong. Ricky was a Northwestern University basketball coach and community member who was killed by a white supremicist while walking with his two kids in their neighborhood in 1999. The following year, The Race Against Hate was started by Ricky's friends and family to bring attention to the need to combat hatred in all its forms.
I am running this race in solidarity with those in my community who continue to feel the pangs of racism and hatred. I am running against a system that continues to opress people of color and would seek to divide us further. Please join me in these efforts by pledging whatever you are able. Money raised by this race will be donated to the Evanston YWCA's racial justice programming, as well as their violence prevention programming. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Warmly,
Jenny
